Maggot meal, as the name implies, is derived from maggots. It is a very nutritious and an affordable component of animal feed that one can easily make to enhance rapid weight gain, especially in poultry. 

Mallam Musa Abdulrahman, an assistant research fellow at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) Shika, Zaria, revealed that you could make maggot meal by visiting the abattoir and collecting the rumen contents of livestock.  

He stated that the rumen contents were then put on the floor or in a container and covered with a lid or tray for three days or more. 

The maggots are then collected and fed to poultry birds or may be sun-dried to be used at a later time.

“It boosts their growth by up to 30 per cent,” he stated.
