President of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Bala Kaigama has emphasised the need  for women in Nigeria to organize themselves as formidable forces in order to win the prevailing violence against women in the country.

Kaigama, who spoke at a women forum in Lagos, assured that TUC will join the crusade to stop violence against women  in the country.

“Domestic violence is a problem in Nigeria, Africa and even the world at large. Rather unfortunately, battering and trafficking have become part of us as we daily wake up to hear of them over the radio, watch them on the television and read them in the daily and social media,” he said.

Speaking, Chairman, TUC  Women’s  Commission, Comrade Oyinkan Olasanoye, said any form of violence against women and girls disempowers them and by extension impoverishes families.

She implored government and organizations to remain committed to training programmes and development with a view to empowering women. 

“We must seek additional knowledge to maximally unleash our potentials. Gender equality does not mean women ruling over men; rather it guarantees a level playing field devoid of all forms of discrimination,’’ she said.
