It is a unanimous opinion that disseminating fake news in societies has great tendencies of causing disorder, animosity and misunderstanding among people as it spreads to nooks and crannies like wildfire.

Factors that lead to disseminating fake news include relying on unauthorised platforms for updates; such sites or channels broadcast or post unverifiable news which users knowingly or unknowingly share or repost.

In order to put a stop to fake news, literacy level should be increased by making education free. Uneducated and inexperienced people on social media are victims of spreading fake news without knowing the gravity of their actions; education especially to village dwellers is therefore important.

Most of those spreading fake news are unemployed; it is necessary for government to employ them or help them with capital to start businesses which would be occupying their valuable time rather than sticking to phones posting and reposting fake news. National Orientation Agency and other sister agencies should double up in enlightening the general public especially those in rural areas on the dangers of spreading fake news or rumours. Lastly, anyone found guilty of spreading fake news or reposting violent contents on social media or anywhere should be dealt with decisively in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
