The founder of The Sally-Mbanefo (TSM) Foundation, Sally Yvette Uwechue-Mbanefo, has urged farmers in rural communities to diversify and embrace other farming activities when the crop season is low.

Sally-Mbanefo, who spoke yesterday at the 6th edition of NABG Agrikexpo and conference in Abuja, said farmers in rural areas usually leave their communities to urban centres when the crop season is low.

This, she observed, usually caused rural-urban migration which she said is dangerous to the agricultural development of any nation as agricultural activities thrive most in the rural communities.

She said Nigeria’s large population should be an advantage as more labour force will be available to produce yields for the large market.

Sally-Mbanefo, however, regretted that potential farmers in the country face many problems which, she said, include access to land, access to ready market, access to technology as well as access to finance.

While calling on the government to continue to provide enabling environment for agricultural development, she reminded Nigerians that peace and unity can only thrive when people have what to eat.
