A trader identified as Ifeanyi Chuckwu reportedly slumped and died during a fight with another trader at the popular Utako market in Abuja.
CP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, FCT police commissioner, who disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday morning said the incident happened on Wednesday after an argument ensued between the deceased and another trader at the market.
He said an argument ensued over a space when the deceased wanted to display his wares and it led to scuffle with another trader, one Mr Onu Simeon.
He said Ifeanyi Chuckwu slumped and died on the spot while exchanging blows with Onu.
The CP said the suspect, Mr Onu, had been arrested.
According to him, the command received a distress call regarding a fight in Utako market and the police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, where Ifeanyi Chukwu was found lying unconscious on the ground.
He added that, “Upon the arrival of my men at the scene, the deceased was immediately rushed to the NNPC Hospital, Utako, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead.”
He said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at a hospital for further investigation, while the suspect, Onu Simeon, is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The police commissioner, who assured the public that further updates will be communicated in due course, urged residents of the FCT to adopt peaceful means of resolving disputes.
He reminded the residents that violence often leads to tragic and unpredictable consequences, while reassuring them of the command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order across the FCT.
