Musa Mai Dori, a renowned qur’anic teacher at Unguwar Dabai has been lynched by members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) at Kankare, a sister community to Dabai in Gwale LGA of Kano State.
Mai Dori was reportedly beaten to a pulp by the vigilantes in their office on Sunday morning after a woman accused him of stealing a new born child which he was said have rescued on a refuse dump.
Mai Dori, who was 50 years old, is survived by two wives, Khadija and Sha’awa, and 16 children.
A brother of the deceased, Muhammad Ashiru Salisu, who spoke to Daily Trust, said what happened was an act of wickedness and which was deliberate because the boys who did that to him fully knew him.
Salisu said, “He had good human relations and taught many of the youths in this area. Yesterday in the evening we heard about the brutal act of some of the vigilante group of Kankare area.
“The incident happened in the morning but we learnt about it in the evening. Malam left home in the morning, while passing by, he saw a newly born baby in a ditch. In his effort to retrieve the child, a woman who was beside him shouted that he wanted to steal the boy.
He noted that most members of Dabai community were set to push to the bottom of the case until the law took its course.
He further said, “Youths in the area are set to take vengeance for what has happened because he taught most of us. Besides, Malam used to cure a lot of us who got broken bones either during football, accident or otherwise. We are suspecting what happened to be planned.”
On his part, his eldest son, Abdussamad Musa, said, “My father was beaten to death, the hospital report shows that they hit him repeatedly on his chest until his heart bled. We will not leave this issue to die like Malam. We will chase it to the latter.”
Daily Trust learnt that seven of the suspects have been arrested and are in police custody at Rijiyar Zaki area of Kano.
When contacted, the state’s Commandant of VGN, Shehu Rabiu, said the command was not aware, but that he would investigate and get back.
On his part, the police spokesman in Kano, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident, saying six vigilantes had been arrested while investigation was ongoing.
