The police in Kano State have arrested 28 youths at different locations for various crimes, with some of them confessing that they use tricycles (known locally as adaidaita sahu) to snatch their passengers’ phones.
Some of the suspects were arrested over motorcycle theft and thuggery.
The spokesman of the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, while parading the suspects, said the arrests were made after series of complaints received by the command from the victims of the crimes.
Kiyawa said, “We received series of complaints last week from residents of BUK Road, Hauren Wanki, Koki, State Road, Sabon Gari and other places. Most of the reports were related to phone snatching using tricycles, motorcycle theft and other related offences, including killing attempts.”
He added that one of the tricycles impounded while in operation to snatch phones was reported over 10 times within the week, and that the owners confessed to have been committing the crime for long.
He said out of the 28 suspects, whose ages ranged from 18 to 25, only two denied ever taking drugs or intoxicants.
Sani Ahmad (18) of Kabuga Quarters, who confessed that he smoke Indian hemp and cigarette, said he had spent over two years in phone snatching and that he was arrested while trying to stab people and rob them of their phones.
Yahaya Musa (20) of Dorayi Quarters said, “This is my fifth time of stealing phones using tricycles, and so far I snatched over 10 phones from people. This will be my last time, God willing,”
Rabiu Sale (18) of Kofar Wambai, said he was an indigene of Magarya in Niger Republic and that he was arrested after stealing a motorcycle in Goron Dutse Duarters.
He said, “I have been doing this for long, but I regret my action now. I want to stop stealing.”
After confessing to their individual crimes, the police spokesman said investigation had since commenced and that the suspects would be charged to court.
