The Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos branch’s Human Rights Committee will tomorrow December 9, at the foyer of Lagos High Court, Igbosere, hold a human rights summit to commemorate this year’s Human Rights Day and the International Anti-Corruption Day.
Renowned professor of Jurisprudence and International Law, Prof. Akin Oyebode, will deliver the keynote address. His paper will be a tour de force on the intersection between corruption and human rights vis-a-vis the judiciary, the bar, prosecutors and other stakeholders in the justice sector.
While former Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Supo Shasore (SAN) is expected to chair the summit, leading lights of the Nigerian Bar and human rights community as well as respected jurists including Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, and Justice Christopher Balogun as well as the top police, EFCC officers and international organizations will form the panel of discussants.
Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade is the special guest of honour while the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, is the guest of honour.
Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the United Nations Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all states and interested organisations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.
According to the United Nations, this year’s Human Rights Day “is devoted to the launch of a year-long campaign for the 50th  anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 1966. The two covenants, together with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, form the International Bill of Human Rights, setting out the civil, political, cultural, economic, and social rights that are the birth right of all human beings.”
