The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation has organised three-day training for police personnel from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
Speaking at the opening in Sokoto, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Anthony Ojukwu, explained that the training with the theme, “Mainstreaming Human Rights into Law Enforcement in Nigeria,” was organised to avail the personnel with best standards of enforcing law and order without violating any human right.

“It is important we keep peace and maintain law and ensure offenders are apprehended but we must respect their rights,” he said.
Represented by the director, civil and political right, Ojukwu said the federal government was concerned about the welfare of the police.
In her remarks, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel, advised the commission to ensure other security agencies were involved in its future training because the police did not have the monopoly of maintaining law and order in the country.
“It is a collaborative effort between stakeholders saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property like the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the army and other security agencies,” he said.
