Ladies, would you rather be told hurtful truths or comforting lies?
Last week while surfing the net, an interesting question got my attention and so did it get the attention of others. The question was ‘Who does a man love most, the woman he lies to or the woman he tells the truth to?’ Womanhood decided to also pose the same question which generated a lot of debate, some interesting and hilarious, and some quite sad.
Michael Attah, 40-year-old accountant, believes that the woman a man tells the truth is the woman he loves. It’s simple and plain logic that no man wants to lie to a woman he loves. He wouldn’t want to do anything that would put him in a position to. You can’t claim to love someone and still lie to her. But we should note sometimes the truth can be very painful.”
Michael’s friend Abubakar Garba, a consultant, however disagrees with him. “A man will do everything possible to protect the woman he loves especially when he has made mistakes. A man lies to cover up his mistakes because he loves her and telling her the truth might hurt her too much or even cost him the relationship he cherishes a lot. I am not saying that telling lies all the time should be the case. It’s right to tell the truth but then we are humans, not perfect and are bound to make mistakes.”
Umar Yaqub, 39-year-old media strategist, says, “Men say the truth to understanding women, most times the women they say the truth to don’t scold them so they are free to say it as it is to them. Telling the truth has nothing to do with love but lots of mutual respect and understanding. The thing is: men are mostly truthful to understanding women and lie to women who aren’t calm and understanding. So it doesn’t have anything to do with love. Like it or not, every man has a woman he tells the truth, he may not necessarily be intimate with her.”
Kayode Olatunde, 45-year-old public policy analyst, says, “A man will love whom his heart is with and telling a lie or truth doesn’t in anyway determine that. Some would lie out of disrespect because they can’t be bothered about explaining the lie or even begging that naturally comes with telling the truth. Some, due to conscience, tell the truth and face the consequences while others don’t really care what their woman thinks or if she hurts. So ladies, because he lies to you does not necessarily mean that he loves you likewise if he tells you the truth it doesn’t really mean he doesn’t love you. Respect though, would make a man to be honest with you and not just love you alone. Different strokes for different folks they say, so is every relationship.”
