Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 35-year-old man, Eluyera Wasiu, for allegedly contracting one Adeniyi Samuel to kill his 29-year-old pregnant wife.

The suspect and his accomplice were arrested following a distress call received by the DPO Ogijo Police Division in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

The police got information from concerned members of the public on January 2, that the two men were engaged in a very serious fight at Oponuwa Area of Ogijo which could lead to grievous injury or death if they were not separated.

The police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Monday, told newsmen in Abeokuta that following the distress call, the DPO, CSP Muhammed Baba, detailed his men to the scene where the two suspects were arrested.

Oyeyemi said during interrogation, Adeniyi Samuel told the police that Eluyera Wasiu had contracted him to kill his pregnant wife, one Bola Taiwo.

According to him, the suspect said Wasiu promised to give him N10,000 for the job, out of which he had already given him N5,000, with a balance to be paid “on completion of the job.”

Oyeyemi said “Preliminary investigation revealed that Wasiu Eluyera was married to Bola Taiwo but they got separated due to irreconcilable differences. Wasiu later got married to another woman who is presently living with him.

“But somehow, he met with his former wife and they started going out again which resulted in pregnancy.

“In order not to upset his new wife, Wasiu asked Bola Taiwo to terminate the pregnancy but Bola refused.

“Having tried all he could to abort the pregnancy to no avail, Eluyera decided to eliminate the woman and the pregnancy.”

The police PRO said the first suspect, in his confessional statement, said “he had twice bought food for her from one eatery and laced the food with poison, but the lady by providence did not eat the food. It was when all his personal efforts to kill her failed that he contracted Adeniyi Samuel to help him kill her.

“He confessed further that he personally took Adeniyi to the woman’s house, and he gave him her picture for easy identification.

“But when he didn’t carry out the assignment as agreed, he demanded the refund of the advance payment he made to him, and his refusal led to the fight which eventually led to their arrest.”

Oyeyemi quoted the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, to have ordered a full-scale investigation into the case with the view to arraigning the suspect in court.
