Fresh details have emerged regarding the gruesome killing of Mrs. Esther Enemor in the Egbejila community of Ilorin.

The incident has shocked the community, with residents describing the crime as one of the most horrifying ever witnessed in the area.

Initially, the police had briefed the press over the weekend, explaining that the deceased’s husband, who later died in the hospital, was the prime suspect.

However, in a telephone chat with Daily Trust on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the command had now focused on the husband’s younger brother as the main suspect.

He stated that detectives were closing in on the suspect, who is believed to be hiding around Share.

The police commissioner also explained the circumstances that led to the death of the deceased’s husband, Ekene Enemor, who was previously arrested in connection with the case.

According to him, Ekene was ostracized by his children and relatives after they discovered his role in their mother’s death.

“I will not say he committed suicide, but the family and children warned that he must not return to the home after his involvement was uncovered,” Ojo said.

Ojo explained that Ekene had only sustained a minor leg wound that was treated at the hospital.

“At the hospital, his breathing and heart rate were irregular, so he was admitted. The following day, he showed improvement and oxygen support was removed. He even ate, but shortly after, his stomach began swelling until he eventually gave up the ghost.”

“What the husband said after his arrest was that he just asked his brother to kill her and not to butcher the corpse,” the police boss narrated.

According to him, “Initially, people believed he was not at home when the brother carried out the act. But his explanation contradicted that narrative, and people said they saw somebody holding a black nylon, who is likely to be him. That is why they thought it was the junior brother because of their striking resemblance. So, we are still tracing the deceased’s brother, and if we apprehend him, we will be able to establish the motive. But his reaction after the killing showed complicity, and from the accounts given, ritual purposes cannot be ruled out.”

During the briefing, Ojo had said a vigilant neighbour, Ahmed Salman, raised the alarm after observing a suspicious individual attempting to lock the Enemor’s house while Esther was reportedly inside.

“When confronted, the stranger claimed to be Ekene’s younger brother from Moshe Gada village. Unsatisfied with the explanation, Salman knocked on the door but got no response. He later spotted bloodstains on the fence and wall of the building, which led him to alert other neighbors,” Ojo stated.

The police commissioner revealed that a search of the premises uncovered Esther’s mutilated remains, dismembered from the neck to the waist, with the head and arms missing. Further search efforts revealed additional body parts, from the waist to the thigh, hidden under a culvert, also without legs.
