The Kano State Consumer Protection Council will soon commence an inspection of restaurants and food processing companies in the state with a view to saving the lives of people from the risk of food contamination and other health hazards.

The Acting Managing Director of the council, Dr. Baffa Babba Danagundi, made this known during a one-day induction course for 100 volunteer workers of the council.

Danagundi said that the council was not satisfied with the way workers at most of the restaurants and food processing companies in the state were conducting their services without health certificates.

“You can walk in a restaurant and find out 30 restaurant workers without a health certificate. This means you can have a patient with HIV or TB or even skin-related diseases handling the food we are eating.

“Henceforth, every worker in a food processing company must have a health certificate so that the health of Kano people will not be at a risk of contracting infectious diseases,” he said.

He added that the 100 volunteer workers would be operating in the 44 local government areas in the state with immediate effect, charging them to conduct their duties without fear or favour.
