It’s fun and equally a challenge for me. That notwithstanding, it gives me  inspiration which continues to propel me to reach the top of my game. It is equally humbling.

Why did you choose this path of entertainment?

Right from childhood I have always had a passion for music. You would always  find me singing or listening to music. That is what gives me pleasure. It still does till date that is why you find me in the field. Then it was just a hubby.  But growing up I discovered that it could be a source of livelihood for me if I decided to take it up. That is why today I am putting in my best effort in order to make a name for myself. My parents also did a lot to support me. I would give a measure of praise to them for whatever strides I may have made as an entertainer because they helped me to realize my dream in their own little way.

How did you start, professionally?

I started on a small scale in Lagos. I played at different events and at various shows organized by companies aiming to sell their products and services. I also did a little bit of training under renowned Lagos-based DJ-Fatai during my secondary school days. I also did a little bit of apprenticeship under DJ Skido.

It was then I decided to move further by going independent. But that was after I had done a lot of training under these gentlemen who took time to teach me the intricate skills of the occupation. It was after this that I was able to make a name for myself in the Lagos entertainment terrain which is known for its toughness. For residents of Ikoyi in Lagos, DJ Swatch became the name on many lips especially those that regularly visit the Ikoyo Nite Club. I was also an in-house DJ at UNILAG FM.

So you play more at clubs?

No, I am not limited to the clubs. In fact I became more popular when I started playing at shows organized in Lagos. It was much easier to carve a name for oneself at such shows than at clubs or entertainment spots.

People usually take up disc jockeying as a result of unemployment. Is this still what is happening?

No, it is not. For me it is a passion first, then a means of income. I didn’t become a DJ because of unemployment. It is a talent that I took ample time to develop. Some may actually be more concerned about the financial benefits but for me it is a passion. When I saw that it was what I am good at I then decided to improve on the relevant skills at my disposal.

Disc Jockey business is a very interesting one. Having spent a few months in Abuja how would you assess the city’s DJ industry in relation to that in Lagos?

Entertainment generally in Abuja is still coming up. Lagos continues to be the hub of entertainment at least for the next few years. The DJ business for instance is not as recognised as the one in Lagos. It may take a lot of time before DJs in Abuja will be given equal recognition as their colleagues in Lagos.

Why is this so?

Lagos is where the action is as long as it’s entertainment. It is the place of music as well as the hub of entertainment. So naturally if you are based there your reputation grows and you garner more patronage. Parties go on in Lagos almost on a daily basis. So it is a goldmine for DJs. In Abuja though the same recognition or awareness is not given to DJs. Only a few people have the resources and time to patronize DJs and even these few are the enlightened ones. Every DJ dreams of practicing in Lagos. Only a few of us have decided to tough it out in the FCT.

What stands DJ Swatch out from the crowd?

I am one of those pioneering a new level of entertainment in the DJ business. I focus on the upcoming musicians and their brands. I aim for the best in musical entertainment. Mine is a new dimension entirely with the ultimate aim of winning the heart of Abuja music lovers. I keep it simple unlike other DJs but still manage to elicit the same response. I am bringing the Lagos style into Abuja Disc Jockey terrain.
