An estranged husband, Osaro Ahuwa, said to have set his wife’s apartment ablaze in Edo State has said he didn’t set it on fire deliberately.

Recall that the estranged husband had on December 31 set his wife’s apartment, located on Asemota Street, Idunowinna Quarters, Benin City, ablaze.

The woman, identified as Tina Uyi, sustained injuries and had to be taken for treatment at a hospital. It was said that property and £4,000 were destroyed in the fire.

The suspect, in an interview with journalists, said he went to the house to see his wife and not to set her apartment ablaze or cause her any harm.

“I didn’t really attack her, she is my wife. When I closed from church at about 12am, I went and knocked on her window and I told her I was the person knocking and that she should open the door for me but she refused.

“I was holding a jerry can of petrol which I bought for my generator at home and I went there with the petrol. When she refused, I used the can to break the window which ignited fire.

“If I wanted to burn the house, I would have run away after the fire was ignited but I waited till people came to meet me because I didn’t do it deliberately.”

Osaro, who said that they had not been together since January 2023, added that they used to talk on the phone until Tina blocked his line.

“I feel bad but I didn’t burn the apartment deliberately. I was only there to see her. I live in Lagos and went there when she said she had returned my bride price.

The command’s spokesman, CSP Moses Yamu, said the suspect was arrested following a distress call from one Osariten Terecy.

He said Tina was asleep in her residence at Asemota Street, Idunowinna Quarters, Benin City, when her estranged husband, one Osaro Ahuwa, went to the house with a keg of fuel and set the house ablaze.

“Fortunately, the woman escaped, but with burns, while the house with everything inside and £4,000 were completely razed to the ground while her Lexus RX 330 SUV was also destroyed.

He said the husband and one other accomplice had been arrested and that investigation was ongoing on the matter.
