A teenager Buhari Aljani in Zamfara State has narrated how he used to imitate the voice of a child or that of an old man to dupe many unsuspecting residents in the state.

Buhari made the confession after he was caught by the Vice Chairman of Zurmi local government who is also a retired police officer.

The suspect said he used to call his victims on phone and speak like a senile old man so that the victim would assume that he is communicating with a spirit.

“I will call my victims and tell them that I want to assist them overcome their financial problems. I would then tell them to go to certain location and deposit some money and that they would see some concoctions in exchange of what they deposit. Thereafter I will go and take away the money,” he said.

He said he was introduced to the crime by some youths, adding that he duped about five persons of an undisclosed amount of money.

Chairman of Zurmi LG Alhaji Abubakar Justice told Daily Trust that the suspect was arrested around Gada Biyu in Gusau metropolis.

“I received a complaint from a brother after he took his money to the riverside in order for the criminal disguising as spirit to take. As a retired officer I vowed that I must get the criminal arrested. I then disguised as the victim so that he would tell us where to meet,” he said.

“I spoke to him and he came out of his hiding place to answer and I spotted him answering the call, we, together with the youths that accompanied me, then pounced on him and got him arrested. I’m calling public to always shun such dubious phone calls and report suspicious characters to the relevant security operatives,” he added.
