The Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, has said he met the council treasury empty and it was garnished by court orders following litigations by some contractors.

Ajiya stated this when he received the secretary of the Area Councils Service Secretariat (ACSS), Adamu Abubakar Bappah, with his delegation who were on tour of some projects in the council yesterday.

He said the first allocation he received when he assumed office was N57 million, while the staff salaries as at the time was almost N80 million.

He added that he paid three months salaries of the staff left unpaid by the past administration despite lean resources accruing to the council.

Ajiya said he was faced with series of challenges during his administration’s first month in office.

 “But I had confidence in God during that challenging time and today, I can tell you without any exaggeration that we have overcome some of the challenges,”  he said.

The chairman, while commenting on some of his achievements within the last one year in office, said the council has embarked on road construction, upgrading of health facilities, provision of boreholes and refurbishing of four tractors, among others.

Ajiya, therefore, solicited the support of the delegation in ensuring the quick opening of the Abuja University of Technology Abaji (AUTA), saying the opening of the university would  reduce unemployment in the council.

He also appealed for the upgrading of the palace of Ona of Abaji, and chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa.

The ACSS secretary, Bappah, said he led a delegation  on tour of some projects in the council and to interact with the council chairman to ascertain some of his major challenges.

He said the visit will also help to see how some of the challenges presented by the chairman would be channeled to the FCT minister, Mohammad Musa Bello, on how to resolve them.

City News reports that the team inspected some projects such as Low cost-Abattoir road, Abaji main market, MDGs water projects and Abaji central health centre.
