The police in Edo State have arrested a 23-year-old man over alleged attempt to kidnap his father’s employer, Professor Emeritus Joshua Ubuigboje.

The suspect, Adamu Aminu, who was paraded with other suspected criminals, said he planned with his two friends to kidnap the professor due to his parent’s poverty and demanded for N7.5 million as ransom.

Parading the suspect in Benin, the State Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, said the suspect planned with his friends to kidnap the professor, who employed his father as a security guard in his house in Saboginda-Ora in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State. He said: “Prof. Emeritus’s was responsible for Aminu’s upkeep right from his childhood till he finished his secondary education before he travelled to Rivers State to arrange for his kidnap. Even when he was expelled from school, he got him another school.

“They made an attempt to kidnap Professor Emeritus and demanded for N7.5 million and directed the professor to pay the money into a Turkish account made available for that purpose,” he said.

Speaking with journalists, Aminu blamed the act on the devil, saying Prof. Emeritus was very good to him. He said he came up with the idea of the kidnap but decided to involve his friend, Prince Diepriye Samuel so that they could extort money from the professor.

“The professor is to be crowned as king in Saboginda-Ora. So I said to myself if we can come up with some ideas and convince him that we are working with his opponent to stop him from being crowned king unless he paid us the money we have asked for, but that didn’t materialise and we were arrested,” he said.

The commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court soon.
