A security personnel, Kannise Adebowale, yesterday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, that he has been regretting exchanging marital vows with Beatrice, his wife.

Adebowale, who lives at the Olodo area of Ibadan, made the statement while testifying before Chief Ademola Odunade, the president of the court.

He alleged that Beatrice had been attempting to kill him, had succeeded in rendering him poor and had turned their five children against him.

“The greatest mistake I ever made in this world is agreeing to go to the altar with Beatrice, because despite my genuine love for her she has been backstabbing and even destroying me. I entrusted all my property, including what I inherited from my father, in my wife’s care, but she is busy plotting my death.

“I gave Beatrice N2 million to establish a nursery and primary school in my house with all the structures and facilities already provided, but she kept the money to herself, giving me nothing for seven years.

“To further satisfy her, I converted some of the lock-up shops that I have close to my house for her use, but if I dare ask her for any returns she would shout me down. Sometimes, she might not give me food and I even beg her for transport fare to my office. Recently, I noticed she was burying charms all around the house.

“Beatrice operates in the dark. She is shocked that I can even come to the court today because I have been hospitalized for long due to her evil plots against me. When I made spiritual inquiries about it, I was told that my wife was on a mission to eliminate me because of my property,” Adebowale explained.

The respondent, a teacher, refuted some of the allegations her husband levelled against her, saying she never knew how the money he gave her disappeared.

“I had all my life stood by Kannise in adversity and goodness, even when he tortured me with battery and starvation. Somebody told him that I brought charms into the house and, as a result, he came home to eject the children and I, promising to terminate my life if I entered the house again,” she said.

Odunade dissolved the union, adding it might be unsafe to allow the couple continue in the marriage.

He granted custody of the five children produced by the union to the plaintiff and advised them to maintain peace.
