The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 50-year-old mother of seven, Menewe Grace, with 40 kilogrammes of Indian hemp.

But the suspect said the desire to give her children sound education forced her into the cannabis business. 

It was gathered that the suspect, who lives in Ibadan, concealed the cannabis in a consignment of vegetables – bitter leaf, pumpkin and pumpkin fruits. 

It was further gathered that the suspect, who hails from Izionum in Ndokwa West LGA of Delta State, was arrested along Uzebba-Ifon road on her way to Oyo State with the illicit drugs. 

The NDLEA Edo State commander, Wakawa Buba, who confirmed the arrest, said four bags of dried weeds that tested positive to cannabis weighing 40kg were found with the suspect. 

He said the suspect will soon be charged to court to serve as a deterrent to others, assuring that they are on the trail of her accomplices.

Speaking with journalists, the suspect said she wanted to use the proceeds to register her children for the Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

 “I am a divorcee with seven children under my care. I am struggling to give them a good education so that they can be successful in life. This is my second trip. The first time I came with my friend who introduced me to the cannabis business, we were successful.

“I was caught this time around. My husband left me three years ago with seven children that is what led me into this problem,” she said.
