Muhammad Sani Balarabe, popularly known as Sboy, is a 14-year-old Hausa Hip-hop artist with over five tracks to his credit. In this interview, the SS1 student talks about how music became his passion and more. Excerpts:

How did you get into music?

I have always been passionate about music and was influenced by ‘Lil-Ameer’. He gave me the confidence to start. I was inspired by his zeal. With the help of my aunt Hanna, who is also a singer, I was able to visit the studio where she works to learn. Sadiq helped me to complete songs I wrote. Presently, I have seven songs and plan to start making videos of them.

What was it like working on your first song?

My first song titled ‘Ina da Fans’ wasn’t done independently. I did it with a friend from my neighbourhood.

What was your parents’ response to your ambition like?

I started singing with the permission of my parents, and I wasn’t criticized in any way by them or other people. They only advised me to be careful and focused.

How do you balance your studies and music?

I go to school every day, except on Fridays when I go to the studio.

What is your vision for the future?

I want to become a star in the music industry, and also be of help to upcoming artists like myself. I can do all kinds of songs, dance hall and the kind that preaches peace and harmony. Once I am done with my secondary school education, I will further my studies and keep on with my music career. I plan on studying Petroleum Engineering at my bachelor’s degree program.

Have you ever met late Lil-Ameer?

I have never met my mentor in person, but I watched him perform and have seen most of his videos. I once watched his performance with some other celebrities like Nomis Gee. Seeing them that day gave me more confidence and motivation, because that day I saw someone almost my own age doing what I love.
