A 14-year-old housemaid (name withheld) who allegedly killed her employer in Edo State has said she was under a spell when she committed the crime. It was gathered that the JSS II Itohan Girls’ Grammar School student was brought from Abuja to assist the deceased, Helen Adodo, with chores about five months before the incident.

While being paraded by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, in Benin, along with other suspected criminals, the suspect said the incident happened when her mistress asked her to give her another clothe to change into as the one she was putting on was smeared with kerosene.

“Before I came out, one of her friends that usually comes around and passed the night came and asked me to follow her to a native doctor’s place which I refused.

“She later asked me to prepare food and boil water for her to bath. So before I came out, her friend had already gone to the native doctor’s house,” she said. 

She said as she came out of the house, uncontrollable forces came upon her which made her to lose senses of what she was doing.  

“I left the dishes I was to wash and went straight to stand on a stone and I later went inside the room with the stone where I discovered that my mistress was still sleeping, so I hit her head with a stone and she died,” she said, adding that “after the crime, I scratched my head and turned around four times before I regained my senses. I then held her and started crying. Before I regained my senses, the spirit warned me not to tell anyone and that if I do, I will die. I have never killed anyone before.”

CP Kokumo said the suspect, along with others paraded with her, would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
