IBBU graduates 29 first, 1,613 third class degrees

Twenty-nine graduates of the Niger State –owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai would be issued first class degree certificates in its 2nd combined convocation slated for Saturday.
In a pre-convocation press briefing yesterday in Minna, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mohammad Nasir Maiturare also disclosed that a total of 1, 281 graduates would be presented with second class upper certificates, while 3, 290 would get second class lower division.
The performance statistic also shows that a total of 1, 613 graduates representing 25.4 per cent, have Third Class, while 135 representing 2.1 percent would be presented with Pass degrees.
The Vice Chancellor said the Saturday convocation is significant in the history of the institution as it would be graduating Post Graduate students for the first time since its establishment.
The convocation, according to him, would see deserving Nigerians honoured with honorary degrees and fellowship among which are prominent cleric in the state Shiekh Ahmed Lemu and the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru.
The event would also witness the launching of a N7 billion endowment fund for the infrastructural development across the institution.
Among the target projects the endowment fund is expected to cover include the completion of the Senate building, department of economics structure and that of local government studies.
Others are 300-bed capacity male students hostel; 500-bed capacity female hostel; multi-purpose student centre; 500 capacity lecture theatre; 250 capacity postgraduate lecture theatre; 1000 capacity computer based test centre; specialized medical centre and a daycare centre among others.
The Vice Chancellor said part of the activities marking the convocation include a memorial lecture in hounour of the first chairman, Governing Council of the University, Prof Abubakar Gimba titled: “An Oasis in the Desert: Abubakar Gimba and the Tradition of the Nigerian Novel” and a Cancer awareness rally which would be flag off the Governor’s wife, Dr Amina Abubakar Sani Bello among others.
