Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s debut novel, ‘Season of Crimson Blossoms’ is to be released November 10, ahead of an official launch of the book at the Lagos Book and Arts Festival on the 14th.
The novel explores an illicit relationship between a 55-year-old widow and a street gang leader 30 years younger than her, in a conservative community in northern Nigeria. Set against the backdrop of violence in Jos, the novel examines the difficulties Nigerians have had identifying and dealing with the notion of trauma, as well as tackling the complex mix of religion and politics in the country.
“It has been a really amazing few years having these characters living in my head. They have shown me things about love, desire, heartbreak, hope, the human condition and our collective humanity,” Ibrahim says about the novel. “I am so excited to be sharing these characters with the world and I hope readers will find them as intriguing as I have.”
The book, published by Parrésia Publishers, will also be released by Cassava Republic in the UK in 2016.
Ibrahim’s debut short story collection, ‘The Whispering Trees,’ is a recommended text in several Nigerian universities and was long-listed for the Etisalat prize in 2014. The title story was shortlisted for the prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing in 2013. He is a Gabriel Garcia Marquez Fellow (2013) and is a judge for the Short Story Day Africa Prize and the Etisalat Flash Fiction Prize in 2015.
