The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said it tracked projects worth N271 billion and recovered N7.2bn, $1.066m, and several assets in the North West region between 2023 and 2025.
Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), disclosed this in Kano on Thursday while presenting a paper titled “From Resistance to Results: Citizens and Media Leading the Anti-Corruption Fight” at a one-day engagement with selected media practitioners from the North West and North East.
Aliyu said, “The Commission tracked 1,440 projects during the period, with 673 projects worth N158.3bn in the North West and 767 projects valued at N112.7bn in the North-East.”
He explained that recoveries in the North West included N7.269bn in cash, $1.066m, as well as 14 buildings, 25 plots of land, and three farmlands. The North East, on the other hand, recorded N43.3m in recoveries.
On enforcement, the ICPC chairman revealed that 171 cases were investigated in both regions, 117 in the North West and 54 in the North East, leading to 16 cases filed in court and eight convictions.
Aliyu noted that citizens and journalists played a crucial role in tracking projects and exposing corruption, stressing that “behind these numbers are real Nigerians, mothers, traders, students, and workers whose daily lives reflect the true impact of our collective fight against corruption.”
The ICPC boss urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Whistleblower Bill to strengthen citizens’ protection and called on the media to sustain investigative reporting while avoiding sensationalism.
