The Federal Government has said it would soon establish a university for information and communications technology which will help in bridging the ICT skill gap in the country.
The Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, disclosed this in Abuja at a one-day ICT sensitization workshop organized for secondary school students in the FCT.
The workshop was organized by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Total view Nigeria in commemoration of the 2016 Children’s Day celebration.
According to the minister, the university when established will have campuses across the six geo political zones of Nigeria and will be strictly on ICT and related courses.
The minister who was represented by the director of ICT in the ministry, Mrs. Monisola Udoh, said that in this modern age where the world has become a global village it is important Nigerian students develop different skills in the information and technology field.
The minister noted that the Nigeria children are faced with many challenges on a daily basis adding that 42 percent out of 134 million of Nigerian population are children in which 75 percent of the live below poverty line.
The minister also said the federal government would soon equip all government secondary schools across the country with basic information technology tools.
