Political leaders and stakeholders in the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency of Ondo State have reaffirmed their commitment to the long-standing power-sharing arrangement between the two local governments as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.

The arrangement, which dates back to 1999, provides for the rotation of the House of Representatives seat between Idanre and Ifedore local government areas. Stakeholders say the understanding has promoted political stability, fairness, and peaceful coexistence in the constituency over the past two decades.

According to records of past representatives, Ifedore has produced three lawmakers since 1999, while Idanre has also held the position for multiple terms under different political platforms. The seat is currently occupied by Hon. Festus Akingbasote from Idanre, whose tenure runs from 2023 to 2027.

The historical arrangement was reinforced in 2011 when both local governments agreed to share key political offices within the Ondo Central Senatorial District. Under that understanding, Ifedore leaders conceded the senatorial position to Idanre for eight years — a decision that produced Senator Ayo Akinyelure.

In 2018, political leaders from both sides reportedly revisited the power rotation formula and agreed that no local government should hold the House of Representatives seat for more than two consecutive terms, amounting to a maximum of eight years.

By that calculation, Idanre would have completed its second consecutive term by 2027. Stakeholders in the area say the next logical step, in line with the rotational understanding, is for the seat to return to Ifedore Local Government.

Leaders from the constituency described the agreement as essential for sustaining unity and political balance, urging all parties to honor the arrangement in the 2027 election cycle.

They noted that maintaining the rotation principle would reinforce public confidence in the fairness and inclusiveness that have defined the constituency’s political culture for more than two decades.
