The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization yesterday said a total of 8,800 returnee internally displaced persons (women and youths) have been trained and empowered for dry season irrigation farming in three local government areas of Borno state.
The Director of Emergency UN (FAO), Mr. Dominic Burgeon stated this during the flag-off of 2000 farmers at Farya village of Jere local government Borno state.
He said, “We are here along with our partners to flag off 2000 farmers restoring agricultural livelihood of IDPs, returnees and vulnerable host families, women and youths…Most of them had been in camps without doing anything, while some of them have lost all their agricultural assets. So it is extremely important we assist them with seedlings, water pump and fertilizer to make them self-sufficient.”
Mr. Dominic said the program in Konduga, Damboa and Jere local government areas was supported by governments of Japanese, Belgium and Ireland.
