If all the wealthy paid Zakkat…

Because from the ordinary almajiri child roaming the streets to the beggar seated in one place, most, if not all of them, are Muslims. How come we Muslims are the ones mostly begging around and we have such a wonderful arrangement as Zakkat laid down for us by Allah? Something must be wrong somewhere. In Nigeria, there are a lot of wealthy people in the Muslim community.
The list of wealthy Muslims in Nigeria is too numerous to be mentioned, but they traverse the political, business and royalty terrains, including ex-heads of state. Take a wild guess of how much 1/40 of the wealth of all these in the elite class would be, and the number of thousands, if not millions, of the poor, the needy and the less-privileged it would have benefited and helped put out of the streets.
Surely, if all wealthy Muslims in Nigeria actually pay their Zakkat in accordance with their status, the poverty rate in Muslims communities in Nigeria wouldn’t be as high as is the case now. This is a wake-up call for us Muslims to help ourselves. Remember when you give out Zakkat, you are also purifying your wealth apart from the reward the Almighty will surely add to you.
The Sultan as well as the leadership of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam should pick this up as a challenge. There should be sensitization sermons to remind and encourage members of the Muslim elite to give out Zakkat to the poor and the needy around them. 1/40 of their wealth shouldn’t be too much for them to part with for the sake of the religion!
