A leading stakeholder in Nigerian basketball, Igoche Mark, has showered praises on Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers for their impressive performance at the recently held 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, in Benguela, Angola.

The proprietor of Mark Mentors basketball club singled out team Captain, Ike Diogu, who marked his return to the team by leading D’Tigers to top Group A of the Qualifiers for special mention.

After losing their opening game, 71-79 to Cape Verde, D’Tigers stormed back to defeat Mali 72-70 in their second match before blowing away Uganda 95-69 in the final group match to go top of the group as they head into the next round of the qualifiers.

Igoche who is seeking to represent the north-central zone on the NBBF board, extended appreciation to the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development for ensuring that the crisis rocking the board of sport federation didn’t impact negatively on the D’Tigers.

He said “The team deserves our commendation because we all know what is happening but the players led by veteran Ike Diogu, didn’t allow anything to get to them.

“They did their best to move on to the next round which is something commendable. I want to also thank the Sports Ministry under the leadership of Sunday Dare, for giving the team the enabling environment to succeed,” he said.

It will be recalled that D’Tigers led by Coaches Julius Nwosu and Ogoh Odaudu of Rivers Hoopers, arrived in Angola without 3 players on the 12-man roster and there was palpable fear but the team delivered in the end.
