The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has inaugurated the Schools Protection Squad (SPS) under the Bauchi State Police Command as part of efforts to enhance the safety of educational institutions across the state. 

The event, themed “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities,” was held in Bauchi on Thursday. The IGP, represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police, (AIG) Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, described the initiative as a proactive step to safeguard the rights of children to learn in a safe environment. 

Egbetokun stated that the Safe Schools Initiative reflects a collaborative policing approach designed to protect students, teachers, non-academic staff, and host communities. 

“This educational security policy provides a detailed framework for proactive and rapid response mechanisms to counter emerging security threats and ensure the uninterrupted operation of schools,” he said.

He emphasised the vital role of schools in nation-building, saying, “Our schools are not just places of knowledge, but nurturing grounds for the future leaders of our country. The security of our schools is synonymous with the security of our future. Therefore, we must ensure they are protected from every possible threat.” 

Egbetokun noted that the launch of the Schools Protection Squad is a significant step toward implementing the National Plan on Financing Safe Schools across the country. He urged all Commissioners of Police to engage relevant stakeholders in their respective states to replicate the initiative. 

“This event reminds us of the collective responsibility to create a safe and conducive learning environment for our children. The Nigeria Police, under my leadership, is working tirelessly in collaboration with stakeholders to uphold this mandate,” he added. 

He called on educational authorities, community leaders, and other security agencies to work hand in hand to ensure the safety and security of learning institutions nationwide.
