The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered an investigation into allegations that some police officers in Lagos demanded $1,000 from a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

The directive followed a complaint by Charles Mbarogu, who alleged that officers from Ladegboye Police Station along Ijede Road, Ikorodu, stopped him on February 28, 2026, while he was driving to Epe with his girlfriend.

According to Mbarogu, after verifying his vehicle documents and NYSC identification, the officers accused him of being a fraudster, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo boy,” and took him into custody.

In a post on X, Mbarogu claimed he was driven around for nearly three hours, pressured to admit involvement in fraud and asked to transfer $1,000 after an officer allegedly saw funds in his cryptocurrency account.

He said the officers searched his phone and private chats without consent and threatened to hand him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

He further alleged that his girlfriend was driven separately in his car, during which she sustained injuries after jumping from the moving vehicle out of fear.

He also claimed his NYSC cap was thrown away, his ID card torn and his vehicle damaged.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the Lagos State Police Command has been directed to investigate and ensure any culpable officers are brought to justice.

He advised Mbarogu to liaise with the state police spokesperson for further action.
