The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday ordered a full-scale investigation into the killing of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, who was hit by a stray bullet in Oyo State on Tuesday.

Daily Trust had reported that Alade was on his way to an examination centre to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination in Ibadan, the state capital, when the incident happened.

The Oyo State government, while reacting to the incident, said the student’s father was driving against traffic when the incident happened.

Giving an update about the incident on Wednesday, the spokesman for the force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the police officer who shot at the deceased has been taken into custody for necessary action.

Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said the IGP promised that the investigative processes would be transparent and that he would ensure that justice prevails.

“The Inspector-General of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident in Oyo State involving personnel of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA), which led to the unfortunate demise of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade.

”The Inspector-General of Police condemned the incident and assured that the officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody while a full-scale investigation is underway.

“He equally reiterated that the process will be transparent, and its findings will be made public to ensure justice is duly served, as he expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased young man.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges citizens to remain law abiding and to channel grievances through lawful and peaceful means,” Adejobi said.

Meanwhile, the Oyo Police Command has confirmed that a bullet fired by a police corporal killed a 14-year-old schoolboy, Kehinde Alade, in the Gbagi area of Ibadan on Tuesday.

 In a statement explaining the incident, the command’s spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, said the corporal aimed at the tyre of Alade’s dad, who allegedly drove against the traffic, but the bullet missed and struck him where he sat in the rear seat.

Osifeso said the officer responsible for discharging the firearm has been taken into custody, along with other members of the team.
