The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has called for deeper collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to strengthen police education, research and specialized training as part of efforts to modernize the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking during a visit to the headquarters of Tertiary Education Trust Fund in Abuja on Thursday, Disu said the Force had already submitted proposals on key programmes and implementation strategies requiring support from the agency.

The IGP said the police aim to expand the training capacity of the Force, promote academic excellence in policing and international security studies, and deepen professionalism through modern education and technology-driven learning.

“We have submitted lists of some of these programmes and how implementation can begin within your areas of specialisation. We want to expand the training capacity of the Force, promote academic excellence in policing and international security studies, and deepen professionalism within the Force,” he stated.

Disu described education as central to effective policing, stressing that many challenges associated with law enforcement stem from inadequate training and limited professional development.

The police chief emphasised the need for scientific and research-based policing, particularly in areas such as forensic science, criminology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, drone operations and crime analytics.

“You cannot conduct effective policing without competent forensic officers and a strong forensic department. We need specialists. We need criminologists,” he said.

He also appealed for sustained TETFund intervention in infrastructure development, including lecture theatres, ICT centres, laboratories, libraries, research facilities, student accommodation and staff development programmes needed for the successful takeoff of the new academy.

Responding, Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, assured the Police Force of continued support toward the establishment and growth of the proposed academy campus in Ogun State.

Echono said TETFund had already commenced plans for joint inspections and assessments of facilities required for the institution’s takeoff, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the new campus in Ogun State.
