The two flag bearers who attended the debate early, ran for their lives when thugs besieged the venue of the debate and disrupted the event as they attacked everyone including the candidates.
Problem started when supporters of the PDP started singing songs attacking the APC candidate, Governor Rochas Okorocha, at the Obiri Edenigbo, Catholic Archdiocese venue of the event.
The APC supporters who got wind of the situation, also started singing their own songs against the PDP which eventually culminated into exchange of abuses.
The situation degenerated leading to the destruction of canopies, public address systems, chairs among others.
When contacted the director, Media and Communication of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, Rev.Fr. George Nwachukwu, confirmed the incident.
He said that while the event was about to commence, people suspected to be hired thugs came into the venue and destroyed everything, attacked the organisers and scattered the place.
Ihedioha accused the APC governorship candidate, Rochas Okorocha, for the crisis.
He said: “ It is unfortunate that Governor Okorocha brought in hired thugs to disrupt the exercise which is a clear indication that he does not want election to be held in Imo State.”
Director of Rochas Okorocha Campaign Organisation, Barr. Ihukwumere Alaribe, blamed the PDP for using thugs to disrupt the debate.
