IITA pledges improved agricultural technology to farmers

The assurance was given by an agricultural economist with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Dr, Tahiru Abdoulaye at the farmers field day at Zanyawa Community in Bunkure Local Government area of Kano State as part of the Sub-Saharan African Challenge program which is funded by Foreign for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) with office in Accra, Ghana.

This was in collaboration with a group of Agricultural Research and Extension Institutions, state ministries, local government councils and several farmer groups and other stakeholders in agro-allied development in Kano and Katsina State, using the innovation platform approach.

 Dr Abdoulaye who is also the person in charge of marketing and economic technology evaluation said, “We are training farmers on how to lay their hands on improved technology on agriculture via dealing directly with the farmers. We have given them improved seeds of soya beans, beans, groundnut maize and rice.

Via this we assure farmers of improved agricultural technologies that will assist in improving agricultural production, increase food security and also increase the farmers’ income,” he said.

In his welcome address the Chairman of Bunkure Local Government Council Alhaji Sunusi Saleh Barkum who was represented by the council secretary recounted the council’s achievements on agriculture. He pledged to continue to give the sector the necessary assistance.

Product made from soya beans by women of the women farmer association were displayed at the occasion. Similarly, water pumps, chemicals and hand sprayers were presented to farmers at the occasion as gifts by Bunkure Local Government council.
