Leaders of Ijaw and Itsekiri communities in Delta State have taken their fight over the Maritime University of Nigeria to the Senate.

 

At a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on the university which is tagged, “University Okerenkoko”,  leaders  of Gbaramatu Community, an Ijaw speaking area, want the university to be named Okerenkoko, while those of Omadino community, an Itsekiri speaking area, want it to be tagged Okerenghigho University. 

 

Speaking for the Ijaw community, Chief Fedude Zimughan said the university should be tagged Okerenkoko Maritime University.

But the representative of the Itsekiri community, Mr. Edward Ekpoko, requested for the change of institution’s name.

 

“The name of the place should be changed to Okerenghigho and not Okerenkoko,” he said. 

 

However, Registrar of the University, Mr. Nathaniel Anho, urged the Senate not to change the name of the institution.

Reacting, Chairman of the Committee Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano) assured the communities that they will look for a way to resolve the differences.
