The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikorodu branch, will be hosting a lecture, titled ‘Combating Corruption in Recession: The Transformative Role of the Bar and Bench’ today.

The NBA made this known at a press conference addressed by its chairman, Mr. Levi Adikwaone, in Lagos.

According to the chairman, the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun and the Executive Director of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), Mr. Adetokun Mumuni, are among personalities expected to speak at the annual lecture, named after Chief B.O Benson (SAN).

The lecture, which is expected to be chaired by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, George Oguntade, is expected to take a critical look at the role of the bar and bench in tackling corruption in Nigeria.

Adikwaone said another reason for the choice of the topic was the need to assess how effective lawyers and judges at all levels of the court have either encouraged or discouraged the fight against corruption.

“This topic was selected after much deliberation with council of elders of the branch. We believe this is the time to look inward and assess ourselves as lawyers, whether we are doing well or not in terms of fighting corruption at this recession period.

“We have gathered very capable persons for the lecture and we believe they will do justice to the topic,” he said.
