Weekend Magazine: Tell us more about your background?
Susan Peters: I was born on 30th May and I am from the Idoma tribe in Benue State. The third born of eight children, I was brought up under strict surveillance of my parents. My father was in the military and due to my military background; I grew up in so many parts of the country and speak the three major Nigerian languages Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba fluently.
How difficult was it going into Nollywood? How did you do it?
It was difficult initially because it was never my priority at first to be an actress but somehow along the line, I ventured into it and when I did, it was not that difficult the way I thought it would be. It wasn’t difficult because when I came into the industry, all I needed to do was attend an audition and I got a role…so it wasn’t difficult at all.
How long have you been in the movie industry?
Since 2002 and I have over 30 movies to speak for me.
Is there any difference between Susan Peters and her daring roles in films?
Yes there is a difference, some characters I play have habits that I don’t adore…like smoking or drinking…sometimes I play junky or aggressive roles but these are quite different personalities from the real me. Susan is cool and calm in person
Asides acting what do you do?
I do modeling, interior designing; I also have a salon and boutique called Suez Place. I do makeovers and I have a charity foundation called Susan Peters Foundation.
Has the thought of going into the music industry ever crossed your mind?
Yes it has several times. My dad used to be a musician back in the days and my younger brother is a musician too, it won’t be a bad idea if I try it some day. As an actor I should be able to do anything right.
Some time ago, you said your dream was to become an air hostess. What happened to that dream?
I went for the short listing and was told I have to sponsor myself to aviation school and at that time, it was much money to go to aviation school. I could not afford it so I let the dream go and focused on other things like acting.
Tell us your experience on the set of `Bursting Out’?
`Bursting Out’ was fun, working with Emem Isong, Desmond Elliot, Daniel Adominikan, Genevieve Nnaji, Majid Micheal was awesome. It was fun all the way and plus I enjoyed my role as IBIERE…
People in the entertainment industry dread a bad day with the press. How have you been able to manage any negative news in the press?
I have just been able to close my ears because that’s part of the disadvantages that come with being in the industry. There’s nothing we can do about it. People must say stuff about you whether true or not.
Do you watch your movies? And if you do, what runs in your mind?
Yes I do, as soon as they are released and I criticize myself before I start getting criticisms from outside and where I did my best, I just give myself thumbs up before anyone else.
Actresses are believed to always sleep their way to leading roles. How true is this assumption?
I would not know how true that story is but people keep saying it and keep assuming that is what happens. I have never practiced it and I don’t intend to start now. So, I reserve my comment.
Who is the lucky man in your life?
My dad
How does he react to some of your roles in movies?
He is very ok with my career; he supports me all through and knows it is part of entertainment.
What are your favorite food, perfume, holiday destination and fashion accessory?
Semolina and Ogbonno soup is my favorite food. There are a whole lot of designer perfumes that I love but I mostly wear D&G and Black Orchid. Miami is my favorite travel destination
What won’t Susan Peters be caught doing
I’ll never be caught naked on screen, not even for a million dollars! Never!
Lately you seem to be engrossed in politics. Would we see you joining the political train soon?
I am a Nigerian who understands “never say never”. We can never tell where one can make an impact in the lives of others. A journey of a thousand miles starts now!
What is your last take for your fan?
They should keep praying for me because they are the reason behind where I am today. Without them, I won’t be here. And I will keep the flag high for them. They should keep up the good work by being good citizens as always and may God continue to bless them…Amen.
