Illegal arms: Dasuki arraigned, granted bail

Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki was yesterday granted bail on self-recognisance after he was arraigned on alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Dasuki was arraigned on a one-count charge of illegal possession of firearms without licence preferred against him by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mohammed Diri.
The offence, according to the DPP, is contrary to the provisions of Section 27(1) (a) (i) of the Firearms Act, CAP F28 LFN, 2004.
Dasuki, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Consequently, defence counsels Joseph Daudu (SAN) and Ahmed Raji (SAN) applied for his bail.
In his ruling, Justice Adeniyi Ademola ordered the accused person to deposit his international and diplomatic passports with the court registrar.
The Department of State Services (DSS) claimed it had on July 6 found in Dasuki’s Asokoro residence in Abuja five Tavor assault rifles, one macro Uzi with serial number 60244 (rifle), 20 magazines (ammunitions), one packet of MOD (Ministry of Defence) AP9 calibre gun 9mm Luger with no: 033373.
Other items allegedly found with Dasuki include: small magazine containing 16 rounds of ammunition and a bigger magazine containing live rounds of ammunition.
The prosecution attached the proof of evidence, case summary, list of witnesses, list of exhibits, affidavit of competition of investigation and statements of the accused and the witnesses to the charge.
After completing the bail conditions, Dasuki was driven out of the court in a black Mercedes Benz E300 with registration number: GW155 NU. He was accompanied by his counsels, including the former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, former Minister of State, Finance and Coordinating Minister of National Planning, Bashir Yuguda and former National Coordinator of Counter-Terrorism in the Office of the NSA and former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kebbi State, Major General Sarkin Yarki-Bello.
The case has been adjourned to October 26 and 27 for trial.
