A former lawmaker, Senator Fidelis Okoro has sued the Nigeria Police and two others over alleged murder of his son by a police officer.

He alleged that his son, John Chukwuemeka Okoro, 31, a fresh graduate of Business Administration from a UK university, was shot in the leg and chest by one Mohammed Yusuf, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, on August 11, 2014 while relaxing with a friend in Gudu area of Abuja. The police were said to be on the trial of alleged car snatchers.

In a fundamental rights enforcement suit brought by his lawyer, J.K Mbanefo Ikwegbue Esq, Senator Okoro, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District between 1999 and 2007, is demanding for the N3bn in compensation/damages for unlawful murder.

Senator Okoro, who joined the Police Service Commission, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigerian Police Force, and ASP Yusuf in the suit, stressed that after investigation and orderly room trial of the officer, the police took no further step in the matter.

He is therefore contending that the killing of his son and the actions of the police have caused him severe trauma and ill-health.

Justice Inyang Ekwo has adjourned the matter to December 5 for hearing.
