ILO urges Nigeria to ratify maternity protection convention

The call was made in a statement by Director General of the ILO Guy Ryder in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day where he commends Nigeria for ratifying the Equal Remuneration Convention, 1951 (No. 100) and the Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Convention, 1958, but said more needs to be done to protect women.
Convention 183 was established in 2000 by the ILO to further promote equality of all women in the workforce and the health and safety of the mother and child, and in order to recognize the diversity in economic and social development of members, as well as the diversity of enterprises, and the development of the protection of maternity in national law and practice.
While expressing delight with the progress made so far in advancing women’s protection in Nigeria, the ILO called for a renewed commitment towards attaining the goals of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platforms for Action.
