Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has dismissed social media reports suggesting he plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the coalition of opposition leaders led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Daily Trust reports that a viral message had claimed Governor Buni and four other APC governors had concluded arrangements to defect to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the reports, the five governors allegedly involved are Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Nasiru Idris (Kebbi), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umaru Bago (Niger), and Mai Mala Buni (Yobe).

Reacting to the claims, the Director General, Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mr. Mamman Muhammad, described the reports as “baseless fabrications, unwarranted imagination, and assumptions that bear no resemblance to reality in any way, shape, or form.”

He stated that at no time had the authors of the viral messages been close enough to the governor to predict or speculate about his political movements.

“It is a great disservice and poor political calculation if these individuals believe they can build momentum for Atiku Abubakar’s political aspirations through baseless fabrications and unfounded assumptions,” Muhammad said.

“They are only engaged in a wild goose chase, exposing their ignorance like a torchlight in the dark.”

Muhammad added: “Governor Buni is not just an APC governor; he embodies the APC spirit entirely, with the party’s ideals flowing through his veins. His contributions to the party—as a two-term National Secretary, National Chairman, and Chair of the Party’s Convention Committee—make him a foundational figure whose loyalty is unquestionable.”

He concluded by saying: “The mischief-makers and their sponsors must simply admire Governor Buni’s political sagacity and only wish they had someone of his calibre. It is nothing more than wishful thinking.”
