‘Imams need to be self-reliant to fight corruption’

The Committee of FCT Imams Initiative (CFII) has tasked Islamic leaders in the country to be self-reliant to fight corruption.

CFII chairman, Sheikh Tajuddeen Bello, stated this during CFII annual conference in Abuja, with the theme: “Imams’ unity for national development.”

Daily Trust reports the event was attended by imams or their representatives from the 17 southern states.

Sheikh Bello, who lamented that corruption is deeply rooted in the country, said the anti-graft war should not be left to government alone.

“As Imams, the leaders in Islam, you need to stand on your feet in order to talk against corruption, otherwise it will fight you back.

“You should find something to do for sustenance, otherwise nothing much you could be achieved,” he urged his colleagues.

The cleric said the conference was funded by FCT Imams Forum through income from its businesses.

He said, “We have a viable source of income. We have two bakeries in the FCT that take care of our expenses.

“For instance, this programme is been fully sponsored through the source, we didn’t ask anybody for anything.

“The same thing happened last year with the exception of a support from a brother, who had paid for our guests’ hotels. We are very grateful to him.”

Speaking to Daily Trust, a participant from Ebonyi State, Dr. Haroun Ogbonnia Ajah, commended the CFII for uplifting the status of imams.
