The comptroller of immigration, Lagos Seaports and Marine Command, Mrs. Taiwo Olayemi, who disclosed this in a chat with Sunday Trust, revealed that only two cases of stowaway was recorded by the command in the last one and half years.
Speaking on cases of prostitution, Olayemi explained that the command recorded zero case, saying the proactive nature of officers and men of the command accounted for the zero turnout.
She said that this is a clear indication that the Lagos waters are currently safe from illegalities.
Olayemi noted that the cases of the two Nigerians who attempted illegal journey was nipped in the bud abruptly by the gallant officers of the command.
According to her, the two culprits had since been handed over to the police for further checks.
According to her, officers and men of the command patrol Lagos waters on a daily basis to monitor activities, stressing that the command’s team patrols between Epe and Badagry.
She said that with 300 gallant officers and four patrol boats under her watch, the art of human trafficking and other illicit activities on Lagos waters would be a thing of the part.
Olayemi also attributed the achievements so far recorded to the comptroller-general of NIS, Mr. David Shikfu Parradang, but called on the federal government to provide more platform and speedboats for officers to man the waterways more effectively.
He added, “One of the core functions of the service is border policing.
It is important to note that we are responsible to the movement of foreigners under our jurisdiction. This is because we don’t know why they are here.”
She revealed that the Lagos Seaport Command covers the Tin Can Island port, Niger Dock, and the Lagos Port Complex as headquarters.
Olayemi also said there had been tremendous changes and achievements under the leadership of the present comptroller-general, which include welfare motivation of members of staff, introduction of e-passport, e- payment, training and re-training of officers with world standard modern trends of immigration techniques.
Continuing, she revealed that a robust synergy existed between officers of the service and other agencies at sea.
