The Nigerian Immigration Service, Bayelsa state command has repatriated over 200 illegal immigrants from the state.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Deputy Superintenent, Imo Emmanuel, who disclosed to Daily Trust Tuesday, said that those repatriated were among over 300 suspects arrested by the command on Monday.
He said that over 70 of the suspects discovered to be Nigerians, mostly from the north, have been released to continue to go about their normal activities in the state.
According to him, those repatriated had no documents to tender to justify their continued stay in the country.
The PRO said that the suspects were picked up from their ”flash points” in the state, which he identified as Etegwe, Igbogene, Azikoro village, Ekeki park, etc.
He said the suspects from Chad were repatriated through Jibia, in Katsina state, those from Cameroon through Ofum border, while those from Togo, Benin Republic and Sierra Leone were repatriated through Seme border.
The Immigration Spokesman used the occasion to warn immigrants into the country to seek entrance through recognized routes so that their presence in the country would be known to the appropriate authorities.
He said that the command would intensify its surveillance operations in the state, particularly as general elections are approaching, more so as Bayelsa is the President’s state.
”We want to ensure that all illegal immigrants are wiped out to create a new lease of life in the state. We are coming close to elections; any of the political parties can use them and cause trouble. This is the President’s state. We cannot fold our hands and allow illegal immigrants mess the state up”, he stressed.
