Mbachu said while inspecting markets in the area on Monday that those caught dumping refuse indiscriminately would be prosecuted.
He said that local government area has already provided refuse bags at designated points for people to dump their refuse.
He said that members of Man ‘O’ War in the area have been directed to monitor sanitation and apprehend those who dump refuse indiscriminately.
Meanwhile, there has been reappearance of refuse dumps in some streets of Owerri, the capital of Imo State, despite effort of the state government to evacuate them regularly.
The dumps, located along Umezuruike Street, Douglas Road among others, have continued to increase on daily bases as people took advantage of their presence to dump more refuse without fear of government’s order. This is coming barely few months after government had ordered the stoppage of dumping of refuse along the popular Douglas Road.
The state government had earlier relocated the refuse containers to its new places inside the market for people, especially traders, to dump their refuse rather than dump it on the road thereby creating negative impression about the state.
Government’s decision to relocate the containers inside the Eke Onunwa Market, along Ihugba Street by St.Pauls, has constituted an unhygienic environment as traders stay on top of refuse dumps to sell their goods to the public.
However, the appearance of new refuse dumps may not be unconnected to lack of monthly clean up exercise in the capital city and its environs by the present government.
