Imo residents decry govt over non-evacuation of refuse

Some residents of Owerri, capital of Imo State have condemned the dumping of refuse along popular Douglass Road and Ekeukwu market.
The refuse they said, had been abandoned on the road, opposite the Ekeukwu Owerri Market, unattended to by the government for about a month.
Daily Trust saw heap of refuse on Douglas Road, JK and Ama Hausa, with the refuse oozing unpleasant smell which made it difficult for people to stay around the market.
A trader at the Ekeukwu Market, Emeka Obieke, said that if government refused to pay attention to the situation, health of many people would be adversely affected.
He appealed to the government to come to their help before people contacted air borne disease.
A former chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Imo State, Dr Hycienth Emele, expressed his displeasure over the situation, saying that any government that refused to take issue of sanitation seriously had failed.
While appreciating the fact that the government had evacuated refuse in other places in the city, he urged the government to evacuate the refuse dumped at Douglas Road.
