Victorious Imo team celebrating with the Chief of Defence Staff U-15 Cup
Imo State team has emerged as champions of the maiden edition of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) South – South under – 15 football championship in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In the final played at the Sharks football Stadium in Port Harcourt, the team sponsored by Military formations in Imo State edged Edo state team 2-1 to win the inaugural edition of the grassroots tournament.
The competition organized by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, is to discover young talents in football and to encourage Nigeria youths in building a career in football.
Military formations in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Abia and Imo state sponsored teams that squared up with other youth teams.
In a third place match, Akwa Ibom State defeated the Military sponsored team also from Akwa Ibom 4-2 on penalties after both teams played a barren draw in regulation time.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, said the competition was set to promote mutual cooporation among states in the South – South zone.
Represented by the tournament coordinator, Rear Admiral GD Kachim, the Gen. Oluyede, said with sports, some of the challenges like insecurity and drug abuse could be eradicated.
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, said the maiden edition of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) South – South under – 15 football championship will help discover committed and talented youths in football.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports in Rivers State, Mr Emmanuel Nda, who represented the governor said the tournament reflects the nation’s collective commitment to developing the next generation of disciplined, talented and focused Nigerian youth.
