The South-South group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that moves by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara are politically motivated.

The group made the claim on Friday in Port Harcourt while responding to accusations by some lawmakers that the governor breached the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the prolonged political crisis in the state.

Speaking to journalists, Comrade Freedom Amadi, coordinator of the APC South-South Group, said the impeachment threats were not based on any alleged violation of the agreement but followed disagreements over the contents of the state’s 2026 budget proposal.

According to him, the governor declined requests to include certain projects in the budget, a decision he said led to heightened political tension between the executive and the legislature.

“What is happening in Rivers State goes beyond a constitutional disagreement. From our perspective, the impeachment talk emerged after the governor declined to approve some proposed budget items. The governor has maintained that he is acting in line with fiscal responsibility,” Amadi said.

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier accused the governor of acting in bad faith and undermining the Tinubu-brokered peace process, insisting that the legislature was within its constitutional rights to consider impeachment.

The APC South-South Group, however, cautioned against statements suggesting that presidential intervention was irrelevant, arguing that such remarks could escalate political tension.

“The President intervened to restore calm and stability. That effort should be respected by all parties involved,” Amadi stated.

The group said the peace agreement was meant to allow governance to continue without undue pressure or confrontation between arms of government.

It also claimed that political alignments may be influencing developments at the Rivers Assembly, though it stressed that this was its interpretation of the unfolding events.

“There are longstanding political relationships in Rivers State, and it is our view that these affiliations are shaping current actions in the Assembly,” the group said.

The APC South-South further urged restraint, warning that impeachment should not be deployed as a tool for resolving political disagreements.

“Impeachment is a serious constitutional process and should only be pursued strictly in line with the law. Political disputes should be addressed through dialogue and adherence to democratic principles,” Amadi added.

The group called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to pause any impeachment proceedings and appealed to the National Assembly to monitor developments in the interest of political stability.
